Iraq; Former president Saddam Hussein's daughter was imprisoned for 7 years
Baghdad: Raghad, the eldest daughter of Iraq's former president Saddam Hussein, was sentenced to 7 years in prison for mobilizing her father's outlawed Baath Party.
According to the World News Agency, a trial was held in the criminal court in Iraq against the daughter of former president Saddam Hussein on the charge of organizing and mobilizing a banned party in the country.
Raghad Hussain was accused of propagating the ideas of his father's party, the Baath Party, in an interview given to the media in 2021 and also publicizing these interviews on social media, even though the Baath Party had been banned in 2003.
In its ruling, the court wrote that the Baath Party was banned after Article 9 of a law passed by the Iraqi parliament in 2016 prohibiting institutions, parties, racist, terrorist and takfiri activities.
The court said that Raghad Hussain violated the law for which he was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Raahsin was sentenced in his absence.
However, the court decision did not identify the interview of Raghad Hussain on which he was convicted.
It should be remembered that in 2021, Raghad talked about the conditions of his father's regime from 1979 to 2003 on the Saudi channel Al Arabiya News.
Following this, a team of lawyers close to Hadi al-Amiri, head of Iran-backed organization Badr, filed several legal complaints against Raghad after interviewing him.
It should be noted that the Ba'ath Party ruled the country from 1968 to 2003, which was ended by a US-led coup and later executed in 2003 after the capture of the fugitive Saddam Hussein.
